IPOH: A former Politeknik Ungku Omar teacher from Germany is hoping to get in touch with his former students. Helmut Ullrich, 74, who taught at the polytechnic here from 1971 to 1973, said he wanted to catch up with his former students, having not met any of them for decades.

“In 1973, my students graduated as electronic technicians. The world provided plenty of opportunities then.

“Now, 50 years later, all would have retired, so I wonder, what are the lessons that life has taught us? I am keen to know,” he said.

Ullrich, a retired communications engineer, said he married a local nurse from Gopeng and returns to Malaysia regularly for reunions.“I am currently in my 10th week in the country. I am based in Kuala Lumpur, where my family is.

Ulrich will be in Ipoh from Jan 26 to Jan 31 for another visit.

“When I’m in Ipoh, I occasionally visit my old school, but I can’t find any information about my former colleagues and students,” he explained.

He spoke about a former colleague named Chee Peng Choy from Canning Garden, but said he was unable to trace him.

“As for my former students, I could remember one named ‘Ms Wong’ who had outstanding knowledge and was also an attractive young lady,” he said.

Ullrich said he would be in Ipoh from Jan 26 to 31 for another visit and hoped to meet with his former students on Jan 28.

“I can also meet up for coffee in Kota Damansara on Feb 11,” he said, adding that he can be reached at helmut@ullrich-web.com or 011-7229 4842 via WhatsApp. Ullrich will return to Germany on Feb 15.
